Donburi 丼
Donburi just means 'bowl', however it popularly refers to a bowl of cooked rice with other food served on top. Varieties of donburi include:
Gyoza 餃子
Originating in China, gyoza are dumplings filled with ground meat and vegetables and wrapped in a thin dough. Typical gyoza are filled with ground pork, green onion, chives, garlic, cabbage, ginger, sesame oil and soy sauce.
Okonomiyaki お好み焼き
Okonomiyaki literally translates to "grilled as you like". It is a very popular pan fried dish that consisted of batter and cabbage. You can select your own toppings and ingredients for your okonomiyaki.
Ramen ラーメン
Another import from China, Ramen are hugely popular in Japan. Ramen is an inexpensive noodle soup, and ramen-ya (ramen restaurants) are very common all over Japan.
Sashimi 刺身
Sashimi is very thinly sliced raw food, most commonly seafood. Because of this, sashimi very often confused with sushi.
Sushi 寿司/すし
Sushi is the most internationally recognised Japanese dish, and very popular in Japan itself. Sushi can be defined as a dish which has containing rice that has been prepared with sushi vinegar.

Tempura 天ぷら
Tempura is lightly battered, deep-fried seafood and vegetables. The most popular kind of tempura is ebi (shrimp/prawn) tempura.
Tofu 豆腐
Tofu is curdled soy milk that has been pressed into blocks. It is a staple of Japanese cuisine. Tofu has a subtle flavour, so it is often marinated or seasoned to suit the dish.
Yakitori やきとり
Grilled chicken skewers. Simple!
Wasabi わさび
Also known as Japanese horseradish, wasabi is a root vegetable that is used as a condiment. Wasabi has a very strong and hot flavour.
